Storrs, CT – Huskies win with late game heroics on opening day, beat Army 5-4.
Marybeth Olson got the start in the circle for the Huskies. She went 3.1 innings with one strikeout.
Olivia Sappington would open the scoring for the Huskies in the second inning on a single to center, scoring Lexi Hastings. Jana Sanden would add to the lead with a double in the third scoring Rosie Garcia giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
The Black Knights would take the lead in the fourth inning 3-2.
Elise Sokolsky came in relief for Olson in the fourth. She finished the game for the Huskies going 3.2 innings, and struck out five.
The Black Knights would add another in the sixth extending their lead to 4-2. The Huskies would get a much needed spark from Sappington in the sixth. She hit a solo shot to right, her fourth on the year to trim the deficit to one.
The Huskies rallied in the seventh scoring two runs to win the ball game. Rosie Garcia hit a sac fly, scoring Briana Marcelino to tie it at four. Sanden would deliver the game winner, on a single to left, scoring Guevarra. This is the second time this year the Huskies have scored a walk off win.
UConn will be back in action this weekend as they welcome DePaul for a three game set in Storrs.
